KADUNA: Area Commander arrests people with illegal firearms
Kaduna State Commissioner of Police, Umar Muri, has directed all Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers, and others, to as a matter of urgency identify, disarm and arrest anyone unlawfully in possession of prohibited firearms.
The Commissioner of Police gave the order on Wednesday, in response to the directive of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Mohammed Adamu, on the clampdown on the proliferation of prohibited firearms in the country.
In a statement issued by the Kaduna State Command’s Spokesman, ASP Muhammad Jalige, the Commissioner also asked the Area Commanders and DPOs to immediately organize enlightenment meetings for personnel of Neighbourhood Watch, Vigilante and local security outfits within their areas of responsibility to ensure they operate in conformity with extant laws guiding their establishment and operations.
According to the statement, “following the directive of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Mohammed Adamu NPM, mni on the clampdown on the proliferation of prohibited firearms in the country, the Commissioner of Police Kaduna State Police Command, CP Umar M Muri has ordered the strict enforcement of the directive in the State.
“Consequently, he has directed all Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers, and Heads of Tactical/Operation Units of the Command to immediately put in place measures to identify, isolate, disarm, arrest and prosecute any person and/or group unlawfully possessing firearms, particularly those prohibited.
“The CP further directs all Divisional Police Officers to with immediate effect; organize enlightenment meetings for personnel of Neighbourhood Watch, Vigilante, and local security outfits within their areas of responsibility to ensure they operate in conformity with extant laws guiding their establishment and operations.
“On their parts, respective Area Commanders are to coordinate, supervise, and report outcomes of the meetings.
“Meanwhile, the CP has warned persons and/or groups in unlawful possession of firearms, especially those prohibited, to with immediate effect, submit the same to the nearest Police Station, as offenders will not be spared.
“To this end, residents of the State have been enjoined to remain law-abiding, vigilant and promptly report any persons or groups found to be unlawfully possessing firearms, especially prohibited ones, to the nearest Police Station or by calling the Command’s hotlines on 08075391105, or 07039675856.
